You will definitely want to use a topper to make it more comfortable. But I specifically bought the bed without much foam/padding because I wanted to replace the foam on the mattresses if it breaks, which isn't possible when it's already in the mattress. (The cushion portion of a mattress breaks long before the springs fail, and if the cushion/foam shoots out, your mattress will sag in the middle.) This innerspring mattress is very springy! So I would only use it for a single sleeper (not a couple as you will wake your partner up (and possibly throw him out of bed) if you turn over. For sex though it would be fun. The best topper configuration is Foam With a soft mattress topper on top, this is good value if you understand you need to add something on top to make it comfortable
