These little pumps are good for many things. They come with a few accessories that I rarely use. Don't make the mistake of "assembling" - the parts included in the kit are only used if you need them for a specific application. Many reviews seem to indicate that this was purchased with no real purpose or for a purpose it is not fit for. It's just a water pump, not a filter, and it's not intended to do anything other than pump water unless connected to other equipment. I mainly use this size for cat water bowls. "Pet fountains" are too expensive and difficult to keep clean. I change the water every day and the fountains make it a chore. However, most animals enjoy running water and it stays fresher when it's moving and oxygenated. I put one of these in a large bowl of cat water. Don't forget to put it on the side of the bowl. Sitting squarely in the middle, face up, creates a wave-like motion that allows the water to slosh out of the bowl. Unlike fountains, no filters are needed as you can (and in my opinion should) change the water daily. However, if you wish, you can place a small mesh bag of activated charcoal in the water bowl. I also use large submersible pumps in dog buckets. Many cats, at least initially, are suspicious or afraid of fountains. This is an ordinary bowl in which water quietly circulates. It's not a loud splash or something weird falling down. There is a dial to increase or decrease the flow rate depending on what you and your cat like best. If they are cleaned regularly and never run out of water, these little pumps will hold up well. They do not contain oil to cool the engine, so it must be immersed in water during operation. The ones I bought are marked 4W and the model number and other specifications are the same.
