Considering the age range of 3 to 4 and our daughter who is 4 and enjoys fishing I thought this would be a great winter toy; However, after actually receiving and reviewing the puzzle, it was passed on to our son who was then 16 months old (now 18 months old). Our son started by grabbing the magnet at the end of the pole and using it to select the creatures raised, slowly progressed to using the pole properly, and then moved on to placing the animals in their correct spots. It was a great first puzzle for him and really helped him develop his motor skills and thinking. Our 4 year old daughter definitely enjoys playing with it, but it's too much of a child's toy for her. Some of the reviews talk about kids spinning a pole and I wanted to give my opinion on that. With or without a pole, our son throws things and throws things, then we fix him and give him his toy back and that's it. A friend's 3-year-old son intentionally uses a pole as a weapon and won't stop when his parents correct him. If our daughter had had this toy as a child, she would never have done anything dangerous with the pole. It all depends on the individual child. If you know your child will be safe with this toy then this is a great purchase.
