Review on Sigma AF 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro Canon EF Lens by Anand Gedam ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

It is of good quality, but I won't buy it again.

I took three lenses to choose the best one for the Canon EOS R: Sigma 150 mm f2.8 EX DG HSM APO, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO, Canon EF 100mm f2.8 USM L IS. The optical qualities of the Sigma lenses practically did not differ, however, the version with a stabilizer gave significantly more sharp shots when shooting handheld at shutter speeds of 1/60-1/100. For this reason, I compared Canon 100 L and Sigma 150 EX OS. Photos from Canon looked brighter (in T-stops) and nicer in tone reproduction. Also Canon is much faster, more accurate and quieter when autofocusing. Canon is definitely better for shooting video. At apertures f / 2.8 - 8 when shooting flat objects, the sharpness on the Canon is excellent in the center, but the corners are depressing with outright soap (compared to the Sigma). Chromatic aberration is also less pronounced on the Sigma. And, of course, 150mm is much more convenient than 100mm in terms of framing. You can shoot small objects without fear of blocking natural light. As a result, I chose Sigma. The predictable consistency of the image over the entire field of the frame was very bribed. There is another nuance. When working with Sigma on the camera, you need to turn off automatic geometry correction, otherwise, the stabilizer may not work correctly, and a dark circle appears in the center of the frame. I am very pleased with the lens, perhaps I will replace it if Canon releases better optics on an RF mount.

Pros
  • Sharpness across the frame, easy framing at 150mm compared to 100mm, good stabilization.
Cons
  • Slow and noisy autofocus, large size and weight.
