This is exactly what I needed for jewelry making and it was useful to have 2 pairs. I was specifically looking for thicker pencils than those sold at most craft stores. I have mild arthritis in my hands and they work fine for me, no cramps. I've noticed a bit of smearing now that I've been using them for a few weeks, but I just kept a cotton swab handy to wipe off when needed. It's also only on one side of the pliers, so you can twist it away from work and wipe it off from time to time. I had to wipe it down quite a bit when it first started, but I haven't seen it that much lately.
