Had this in my car and had to return two for the same reason. It must always be connected to the mains in order to function. Even if you move the filter to another location, it may bend and damage the charging port on the car. Not a cable. It gets into the car and becomes unusable. That works great. I've done my best to keep it safe, but it MUST be plugged in, not worth it because you're bound to break it.
