Great deal, great for international travel, if a bit noisy

I bought this battery powered trimmer for a trip to Thailand (I'm from the US). I've had a Wahl 110v corded clipper for years that I use to trim my beard to stubble, but of course I couldn't use them in Thailand and I didn't want to look like a savage after 2.5 weeks there. I bought this and an AA battery charger (which, like most chargers, works with any mains voltage/frequency). I didn't even need a charger; The 2 rechargeable AAs I put in my Wahl Clipper Groomsman trimmer worked several times before the trip and at least 3 times during the trip without recharging. AA NiMH rechargeable batteries have been known to withstand more stress than AA alkaline batteries in high drain applications (like my old point and shoot digital camera) which may have helped. Other thoughts: This trimmer was smaller than I'm used to, but it's perfect for travel. For travel I fitted a 1/16 inch (1.5mm) guard (a good length for stubble) to protect it in my toiletry bag and didn't bring any other accessories. It's loud, subjectively twice as loud. like my old 110v Wahl clipper. And it's an annoying, higher pitched sound, not a low hum. But other than that it seems well designed. For $13, I'd pay a few dollars more for it to be quieter. If it were quieter it would be a 5 star product. The second time I tested it with the blade guard to get the "bristle" length, it often grabbed the hair and pulled it out. Ouch! But this is the only shave where this has happened. I'm wondering if the blade guard wasn't fully/properly installed. Make sure it snaps into place and is not tilted/offset, it should be evenly spaced from the blades across the full width of the blade.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
