Flat stool that combines safety and compactness

We've had this stool for two years now. It was perfect for our 18 month old (who is almost 3 now!) and I think he will work for us for a few more years. He loves to bake cookies with me so he can play with his toys at the counter while I cook. It's not as safe as the Montessori tower (see below - can be a problem for very adventurous climbers), but I'm happy with its safety features. Pros: Low profile, added security of side handles. Steps Nice design Can be used for years Cons: Steps can get dirty/stick to food. Must be washed with soap and water. Children can fall off the edge of the stool when pushed away from the counter (we have a strict rule that the stool ONLY stays in one place in our kitchen). There is a strict rule for this too. As children get older, they can lean on/over the handles and risk falling on them. Then they are usually quite firmly on their feet and that is no longer a problem.

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Difficult to say
