So this is good and bad in certain cases and if you have any security concerns you should read this before you buy. - Summary - Advantages: - The system is much more powerful in reading and writing than a traditional rebranded Chinese DVR. - Charge twice as much as Zozi or other brands (using the same with rebranding) - Motion detection was a surprise - Headlights not too strong but welcome feature - Night IR is ok, above average - Alarm/voice alert via camera is surprisingly loud - Facial recognition actually surprised me and made me wonder what features local governments have in their surveillance systems since this consumer device has them. The cameras do not require a power source, ethernet provides the signal/data and the power recording audio cable is always better than wireless in terms of no frame/packet loss. Con: - Seagate drive is junk and should be replaced with wd Purple immediately. Seagate is notorious for its poor drive speeds compared to wd, so don't take the chance. Motion detection either doesn't always detect or gives false alerts at night and requires sensitivity fine-tuning. Night flies give it off by reflecting their rays, but not as brightly as it seems, which is both a plus and a minus. The higher the resolution/bitrate you record, the more heat you generate and overload the DVR. It will also take up more space. But it's not as crystal clear as the adverts lead you to believe - security concerns* - internet connection* see below - application* see below As an administrator and network security engineer dealing with malware and offensive security methods, I can say from experience that this item is not connected online should be. No offense to the developer, but this is one of those generic products that comes from the factory/random name. The device requires you to use security questions, and some of those are your Facebook or Google account name, plus a random question that's very similar to the security questions for those accounts. The device has no evidence of security in its network connection, and it seems to want to connect to an online service that you don't know who has access to or what they can use it for. If you're really tech savvy, this should only be connected through an isolated VLAN that prevents router access and is isolated from your home network of connected devices. Well, if we have an isolated device, everything should be fine to connect to the network, right? Oh no. To use it online you need their "app" which is like a standard rebranded multi-brand Chinese app. The problem with this is that you are now downloading an app on your personal phone that has access to everything on your device as well as your home network. It's not open source to ensure it doesn't do anything nefarious, and there's more to worry about when you run an in-app Exodus scan and see processes and ad networks that you don't want. in terms of network security and would not be surprised if personal data is compromised while using it. This is the perfect setup if you want to break into people's private networks and access a lot of information about individual accounts. In fact, the chances of being hacked are greatly increased. If in doubt, check Shodan and IP cameras and you can basically view people's security cameras online. Many of those who think they are private. In short, it's great for offline use, but I wouldn't recommend connecting it to a network. Sure, mobile browsing is convenient, but you might be sacrificing too much for it.
