Overall this hard drive is great and it performs a little faster than advertised! This drive is louder than my other Western Digital external hard drives, which are smaller and run at 5400 RPM and do not require an external power supply. , but they're about 60% slower than this beast. My 4GB WD HD gets about 108MB/s and this 8TB WD HD gets 258MB/s in CrystalDiskMark (USB 3.0)! A little noise is acceptable to me, especially for the speeds this thing produces. The noise isn't like the clicking issue that others have experienced, but you can hear the powerhead clicking from time to time. When the drive is not in use, it makes no noise and on my kWh meter it only reads 0.1-0, 2W! I love the fact that it has an internal fan which I can't hear but wish the whole thing was aluminum/metal and not plastic but then again I probably won't like the price. Overall it looks and feels good. The status light on my front does not light up. I've never seen it light up, which is pretty disturbing, but other than the status light, the drive works great. I wanted to close the light because I was placing it, so it worked in my favor, but it's a little concerning. I think this drive is good value for money. Regular external hard drives are slower but slightly cheaper, SSDs are faster but MUCH more expensive for comparable storage space and come with the caveat that they can only be recorded a certain number of times.
