The pins leave a line on the fabric that will stay on most fabrics when hand quilting. You can't get an exact point with a pencil. If you sharpen this pencil to a good point, there will be splinters of lead all over the place when you try to use it. Insufficient sharpening results in a thicker line and sometimes a piece of the pencil breaks off anyway. Due to breakage, these pins wear out much faster than they should. I haven't had any trouble removing it so far, either from the constant editing of the project or from water/fabric washing. I'm still looking for the best line marking tool for fabric.
