Review on McMurdo Fast Find Ranger PLB by Kevin Apriando

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Better value than ACR, slightly longer.

Primary function which is difficult to verify or compare as I have never used this unit or my ACR: rescue radio transmission to search and rescue teams via satellite and homing beacon. McMurdo is a trusted brand for this type of gear so after successful testing I will trust this unit if I ever need it. It's better than my ACR ResQLINK for the most part in terms of design and cost: + antenna is closed and won't get stuck or open. + Buttons are labeled more clearly and positioned better. does not dangle with low risk of separation. + The case is included and big enough to put the device in easily. The bag appears to be well made. This is not a swim bag. + Better price than comparable ACR offerings. + The battery life is better. My device appears to be brand new with a battery labeled as having a 7 year lifespan from receipt. (My ACR was about 4.5 years old when I got it) + Feels better in the hand, thinner and with a nice rubberized grip. Small things I don't like that the ACR is better: - Prefer the bright yellow of the ACR over the orange - The McMurdo unit is a bit longer, 1/2 inch. The shorter the better. While the fold-over sticker on the ACR is dull and can come loose, it provides a secure place to attach the NOAA registration sticker, which isn't always laminated like it used to be (shame on you for being cheap and stupid, NOAA). McMurdo will likely need a laminated label/tape cover to prevent damage. Both ACR and McMurdo make reliable devices and you can't go wrong with either, but the ACR price premium doesn't make sense for a product that's equal or slightly behind. McMurdo proposal.
