There are no drop down sides as I used fans and the sorting makes it easy to complete the puzzle. Trays will stick together if not stacked at an angle during use. For storage, you can fold the top and wear it when you have cats. Not me, but friends who complain about cats fitting into puzzle pieces unsupervised.
