I put it on completely on my back when boarding the plane so as not to check the bag or put it in the attendant's hands. When fully packed it is still under the seat but not over the head (5 seats in diameter) of an AA American Eagle aircraft. It fits on top of the big planes. I wish the lanyard on top was soft or thick. When worn like this, it becomes a little uncomfortable. The upper ends of the zip are sewn into the inside of the seams to prevent loosening. Well made, much better than the smaller one I bought from another manufacturer.
