Review on Canon VIXIA HF G50 Camcorder by Brian Rivenbark

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great camcorder but needs some stabilization work

I sold my 2013 Sony camcorder to buy this one and I did I'm VERY glad I did. The picture quality is amazing. It's light, easy to control, the stabilization is very good and so on. I also bought a DM-100 microphone and an extra battery and am now ready for my next vacation. UPDATE: 5/30/2019 I recently took a camcorder with me on a 4 day cruise to Cuba. I noticed two problems.1. (Minor) You *really* have to hit the record button to make sure you're actually recording. I've found a couple of instances where I've closed the screen and pressed a button thinking I was going to record, and then checked multiple times. Minutes later and there was no recording because I didn't press the button hard enough.2. (Simple) In practical situations, such as walking around a ship while shooting and pointing the camera at different scenes while walking, I later discovered that there really isn't any built-in stabilization. If you want high-quality footage, you need to treat it like a regular DSLR that records video. Hold it with both hands and minimize the movement with a slow and steady motion. The irony was that I was capturing footage on a GoPro 7 with hyper-aliasing enabled the same way as I walked around the ship and the difference was startling. Canon should figure out how to add this kind of stabilization to a camcorder; maybe a license for something from GoPro.

Pros
  • Turn your VIXIA camcorder into a high quality webcam with HDMI only output
Cons
  • Legacy model
