Review on 💡 Westinghouse Lighting 7224200 Comet - Stylish Indoor Ceiling Fan with Light in Matte Black by Jon Booth

I came across this product through a Wirecutter review and decided to buy it. After about two months of use, I can say with certainty that this fan is pretty good. LOCATION: I installed a fan above the kitchen table on an 8 foot ceiling in a flush configuration. AIRFLOW: meets my requirements. My family only used it at low or medium speeds. The high speed setting repositions free paper on the table below. LIGHT: Many reviews mention this light as too dim for a key light. I agree that two 40w bulbs would be too dim for my space. So I just plugged in two equivalent 60W (8W) LEDs. LEDs put out a lot more light per watt, so I highly recommend using them with this fan if you need more light. Of course, make sure the switch you use is LED compatible. SOUND: My initial setup plan was to run the lights on a dimmer and the fan on a regular switch. However, during installation I encountered a problem where I had to connect both the light and the fan to the dimmer circuit. I can confirm that the dimmer (Leviton) on max makes this fan hum a little. I quickly turned off the dimmer with a simple on/off switch and the fan was completely silent. I plan on jumping back into the attic when it gets cooler and hardwiring the fan circuit and turning the dimmer back on for the light. The position of the fan is convenient for easy use of the cable to control the fan. I was lucky with the blades as they didn't need to be balanced. INSTALLATION: I deduct a star here. The design of this fan considers easy installation, which is very valuable. The internal wire between the shells is very long (probably 6ft) which makes wiring easier. There is a hook on the bracket to temporarily hang the motor from the ceiling while you finish the wiring, so you don't have to struggle to hold the heavy motor in one hand while you finish the electrics - a big one Plus. In fact, the wire is a bit long. It was difficult for me to land in the case at the final stage of installation. The assembly of the blades was also comparatively difficult, since the screw heads had to be punched through a slot with a screwdriver in order to become accessible. I threw them a few times and had some choice words. However, I find that a reasonable expense for an item that is installed once and should not be touched for years is perfectly acceptable, especially when the design looks modern, screws appear to be hidden, etc. I removed one star because the vents at the top of the engine compartment are large enough to allow the headliner screws to pass through. I had almost completed the fan installation but I dropped one of those screws in the final steps and it went into the engine bay. It immediately stuck to the motor magnet so no pressure could recover the propeller. I had to remove the whole thing and disassemble the motor to return the propeller. The screw itself wasn't that important, but starting the engine with a stray piece of metal inside wasn't a good idea. This was of course very unfortunate, but proper sizing of holes, slots etc to prevent this is just good design practice. Basically, I am satisfied with the fan. I prefer a modern and clean look although my wife hates it and would prefer something more ornate. But that's a whole different topic.
