I believe these small storage containers are for small items like beads or craft jewelry. Unfortunately, the lid's plastic isn't inherently rigid and strong, and had enough leeway and flexibility to allow for these items to be lost or mixed up. One reason for having these slots is to keep items separate so this species misses the target.
