Messages are too long

I've seen so many pictures in reviews of kids wearing them but the posts are too long so I'm confused. They look adorable and of course screw down well so they don't fall off easily, but even for an adult the pins are too long for the butterfly to rest on the earlobe. I missed my return window so not sure what I will do with it but neither I nor my 18 year old daughter can wear them.
