Review on JackDB by Chris Reddick

JackDB is a free, open source, cross platform, SQLite based database management system.

This tool does everything from connecting to databases to visualizing tables. But there are some issues I'm having trouble getting around: 1) The ability to upload CSV/Excel files directly into a database query. 2) I'd love to see the ability to export reports (or any other report) as a PDF file. 3) Can I create my own templates? If so, how? I'd love to have the ability to create a template that I can reuse. This application has many features which make it stand out amongst others in this area. It seems like they really put effort into making things work together nicely instead of just slapping something onto an existing project. I've used a few applications before and they tend to be pretty limited or require lots of configuration to get them to do anything useful. JackDB actually makes you think through your options first then lets you go forward with confidence. Also very helpful when dealing with large amounts of data.

Pros
  • They wanted to make sure the data is presented in a logical way so users could understand what's going on
  • They also took the time to implement their own unique set of features rather than using off-the-shelf software
Cons
  • Although they do provide a nice set of videos on Youtube.
  • Sometimes it takes a while to import large datasets due to memory constraints.
