I have the original "classic" Steripen and bought this newer model as a replacement. I've put many hours into my first one and I'm not sure when a lightbulb can die. This update is slightly better than the original, but it's not a huge difference. People complain about Steripen's unreliability. I've had issues too - basically a red light warning for no apparent reason. What I found (I think) is that some types of water have too little conductivity to satisfy the sensor telling the computer that the unit is submerged. If the pen doesn't work after two tries, I add a small pinch of salt to the water and stir it with the steri pen. That almost always solves the problem. The salt increases the conductivity of the water and the sensor is satisfied. I use lithium batteries and they have a very long service life. I used it to sterilize water for 4 people for 8 days and the batteries lasted well. Lithium batteries are lighter, perform better at very low temperatures, and have a longer shelf life than alkaline batteries, in addition to a longer lifespan. Lithium batteries are expensive, but they cost no more than alkaline batteries considering their longer lifespan.
