Shorts and saddle preferences are very individual, so I'm starting where I started when shorts were wool and stretch and suede was a real piece of very soft, absorbent suede. So. I don't like bulky shorts at all. I find that the bulky padding increases irritation and tends to balloon in a way that completely counteracts the contours of a quality saddle. For example, the saddle has a relief channel to protect the perineal nerves, while the solid padding only simulates dangerous pressure. Get a saddle with the right shape and amount of padding for you, and the job of padding in shorts is to minimize friction between the saddle and your skin when your legs travel miles. Momentum due to the unusual last design and good reviews (and my old shorts are wearing out). I waited a bit to check them out until I had some sweaty 40+ mile rides. I've really tried, but I can't find anything I don't like! In fact, a bit of targeted padding is actually an improvement (sigh!) over my more minimalist shorts. It's only at key pressure points, never bunching up or feeling bulky. The friction is as good as any short I've had (since the 70's!). I've just ordered a pair of shorts with no overalls and will probably buy tights before the cold weather sets in. A note: the black bib straps can be quite warm, so it's probably worth paying a few bucks more for the ones with the white mesh fabric over them.
