Epson LabelWorks LW-300 vs. LW-400 comparison

This review is for the Epson LabelWorks LW-300 and LW-400 label printers. Epson LW-300 and LW-400 printers are very similar in functionality. The main differences are listed below: 1. The LW-300 supports ribbons up to 1/2 inch wide, while the LW-400 supports ribbons up to 3/4 inch2 wide. LW-300 can store up to 30 labels and LW-400 can store up to 50 labels.3. LW-300 can print up to 2 lines per label and LW-400 can print up to 4 lines per label.4. The LW-300 requires 6 AAA batteries and the LW-400 requires 6 AA batteries (batteries are not included with either printer). Both printers offer 14 different fonts in 10 different styles, and both have over 300 special characters that can be printed. . Each also offers a variety of "boxes" that can be configured to print around selected text. However, the biggest difference between the two printers is that the LW-400 can create custom sizes. It can create cable identification labels, cable wrap labels and, which is very important for some users, it can print barcodes in 8 different formats. When printing barcodes, the LW-400 is also smart enough to recognize when you haven't entered enough digits for that particular barcode format. You cannot print the barcode until you enter the correct number of digits. Both machines are easy to set up. Once ready, you can print labels in 2-3 minutes. Ribbon changing is easy on both devices, and both accept the same wide range of tape media (considering the LW-300 is limited to a maximum tape width of 1/2 inch). I'm impressed with the printing capabilities of these two devices - I'm disappointed with the print quality. Both devices print clean horizontal or vertical lines very well, but curved lines are rendered roughly. They look pixelated. The printhead simply doesn't have enough resolution to produce smooth, curved lines. I also have a Brother label printer and while it doesn't offer the variety of fonts and special characters that these Epson printers offer, Brother labels are sharper and Cleanser. 5 stars if the print quality was better. In addition to the print quality, these printers are well thought out and constructed. They are easy to use with intuitive controls. The print quality, while not exceptional, is probably sufficient for most users.

Cons
