Review on Purina ONE SmartBlend Natural Adult Dry Dog Food for Sensitive Systems, Skin & Coat by Scott Rodriguez

Affordable food with limited ingredients for dogs that can't eat chicken

My GSD puppy has been suffering from loose, bulky stools for months. He had no parasites and was otherwise healthy and alert, if a little skinny. I always gave him more expensive pellets and canned food because I thought he might have an intolerance to wheat, corn or soy. I was also concerned that he might have EPI or something worse. Then I noticed that he had a paradoxical reaction when given the traditional stomach-soothing meal of boiled chicken, pickled pumpkin, and white rice - his loose stools didn't improve and he suffered from severe diarrhea instead. I have tried an elimination diet and have found that he tolerates lamb, beef and fish but becomes very ill if chicken is given as the main protein. It was great to discover the source of the problem, but then I stumbled upon a new problem – chicken is in almost every kibble and treat for dogs. Limited ingredient diets that don't include chicken are a little prohibitively expensive as my dog will weigh around 100 pounds when he's finished growing. Then I found Purina One: Sensitive Systems. This is a good quality, inexpensive kibble from a reliable manufacturer and one of the few sensitive stomach/skin diets that does not contain chicken. After following this diet for two weeks, he gained at least 4 pounds and had normal, consistently well-formed bowel movements for the first time. I hope this review helps someone.
