I have another book lamp similar to this one and it works offline. I mean, you just charge it up via USB and that's it. This must be plugged into an outlet or run on batteries. Although the description says without batteries. When I tried it, the light seems normal (not as bright as my other one). It's lightweight and it's great that it comes with 2 separate light heads for adjustment. If you don't mind using batteries or turning on a flashlight while reading, that's fine. I will be back because I got this for my mother in law and wanted one with a rechargeable battery. I had no problems sending the wrong USB like some other people
