This tool is probably mainly for cutting the softer tubes used in plumbing etc. I used it to cut a very hard steerer tube on my mountain bike fork. It made a nice clean cut, but be aware that I probably turned this cutter around (and tightened it very gradually) for probably 15 minutes before it finally cut all the way through. My hands and arms ached from the exertion, it's not an easy task. So yes it will do the job but I don't know if the blade will be sharp enough to cut much more in the future (not that I'll need this tool again). Thinking about it, I'll probably give this to my local tool lending library. At $10, it was cheaper and quicker than making an appointment at my local bike shop, and I had some satisfaction in doing all the work myself. And yes you can install a new star nut in your new fork too, there are videos to walk you through the process without any special tools, it was a breeze.
