NES games are perfect for this type of project. The problem with this is that the color choice is weird and wrong. How do you screw it up? Brown, in particular, is more of a rusty red, and "red" has a tiny drop of blue in it, resulting in a color not found in the game. But that's really a minor thing, the real problem is that these two almost red colors are incredibly difficult to tell apart. Not only is it uninteresting to catch them separately for use, but side-by-side on the same sprite, they're not easy to tell apart at all. I would do many things differently. But that's what it is. If you're willing to take the navy alone, you can do loads of cool stuff with it and nice variations if you want to look at the sprites.
