Finding time for a project is a commitment. So it was frustrating when I wanted to pour water into an assembled 4 inch mold only to have it fall apart. The water had to be poured into a measuring cup so I knew how much the sphere could hold. The flow of water into the sphere was sufficient to destabilize the molded seal. Before I could do what I wanted I had to create a support for the form. 1) Take a kitchen bowl with a flat bottom and slightly straight sides. I had a corn dish. 2) Cover the bowl and sides with plastic wrap (I used a press and sealed). Later when the shape is complete I can lift the sides to pull the shape out. 3) Mix the plaster and pour it up to the level of the bottom half of the sphere, the line of the hemisphere. Fill the ball with water so that it doesn't float on the pavement, but sinks properly to the bottom of the bowl. 4) Cover with another layer of plastic wrap after curing. 5) Fill above the hemisphere with plaster. line at least an inch deep. 6) After curing, pull out the first ring. 7) Pull out the ball mold 8) Pull out the bottom ring of the mold holder. Align the top ring with it. Separate them with paper towels or plastic wrap. Make alignment marks on the base shape. Wait for the two parts to heal. Needless to say, it cost me my playing time. Later when I made my sphere the epoxy used wasn't as good as I had hoped so please ignore the inner quality of the sphere in the lit picture. The light base came with the shape and is very good. The rim around the ball is the rest of the mold itself. Of course, the bottom of the ball (the pouring area) also needs cleaning after firing. But both are secondary. The form works well with the right support.
