The good first: This $35 magnifying lamp is a steal. I was looking for: adjustable color range and dimming. If you think about it, these features aren't necessarily suited to a magnifying lamp - you'll most likely need 6000K color (daylight) and high brightness all the time. But since it has these settings, I can use it like a regular table lamp and switch to magnification when needed. Although there are only three color modes, it has ten levels of brightness and is much brighter than most table lamps at the highest level. To be honest, three color modes are enough for most people: yellowish light for nighttime relaxation, whitish light for normal use, and blue (daylight) light when you really need to see every detail. At 800 lumens, it's about as bright as a 60-watt (frosted) incandescent bulb, and at 80 lumens, it's like a (slightly bright) night light. That covers a lot of the basics. Now for the bad: I agree with the previous reviewer and point out that the rod that connects this lamp to the base seems to be poorly made - the folded sheet of metal that goes in the hole reminds me of something you maybe find on an old pole from the tent, not on the lamp. This makes adjusting the lamp a little fiddly - knowing the point of contact is weak, you'll probably want to do this with both hands so you don't put too much pressure on that particular joint. It's also pretty easy to set up this lamp so that it falls down when it's in the base. I suspect this adds flexibility for those who want to attach it to their desk, but can be annoying for those who want to adjust it with one hand while it's in the base. Granted, that's a minor complaint. but if you plan on using this as a magnifying lamp rather than a regular table lamp I'd probably look elsewhere. Those disadvantages aside, this is a great deal for anyone looking for a table lamp that can sometimes double as a magnifying glass. and as far as I understand it's a 5 star value if that's what you want.
