I don't know why I thought they could be worn separately - not the case. They are fairly sheer and are best worn under a skirt, dress or shorts. I also found them a bit pricey considering they literally look like thick tights, but I decided to keep them as they are a bit warmer than regular tights. Daughter loves that they have no legs and wears them willingly. True to size - it's on the 'skinny' side but they didn't have that awkward gap that many pants have.
