Review on Auxbeam NF-S1 Series H4 LED Fog Light Bulb - Quieter & Brighter Light (Pack Of 2) by Jim Polacek

Revainrating 3 out of 5

About as bright as 1650x2 lumens halogen, needs additional device to avoid light-out error

My purchase criteria: One of the H7 halogens in my 2010 B6 Passat burned out and I was eager to convert to LED for higher brightness and longer life. Insisted on finding a fanless LED because didn't want the trouble of the fans going bad (as they will eventually) and cause the LED to overheat and melt everything around them. Tried this one as it was inexpensive and well reviewed. The result: My evaluation after comparing to the original halogens was that these 4000-lm LED are about as bright as the 1650-lm Philips X-tremeVision +130% halogen they were meant to replace (which are the brightest available H7 halogens). It's always a little guesswork how these lumen ratings for LEDs translate to real-world performance, so it's important to do a direct comparison. I took a picture with the 4000-lm LED on the driver's side with the remaining functioning 1650-lm Philips X-tremeVision +130% halogen on the passenger's side. The LED is whiter and that looks nicer, but if you look carefully, you'll notice it is a little dimmer in the middle. I was looking for something brighter than the halogens which are really insufficient (perhaps due to something about the Passat projector lens design).Other annoying but solvable issues: You get a no-bulb error message, aka a CANBUS error. This is because the LEDs draw 25W instead of the 55W of the halogens, and the CANBUS system thinks you have a burned out halogen. To remove this error, one needs to install in-series resistors such as "XtremeVision LED CanBus Anti Flicker Canceller Capacitors Plug and Play Error Free" that add power draw to get closer to 55W. To me this seems extremely inefficient and takes away one of the selling points of LEDs, which is that they are more power efficient. It also adds cost (about $15).Installation notes: I had to find an adapter ring to hold the LED in place; the ring goes under the H7 flange. This is something these LED item descriptions don't mention, although it is universally true. The adapter for the B6 Passat (2006-2010) is a black plastic ring that one has to secure under the H7 flange (by unscrewing the flange, then sliding the ring down and around the LED, then putting the flange back). Other VWs use the metal clip type of of adapter, but the B6 Passat is different. The one I found eventually is listed as "Koomtoom H7 Led Headlight Bulb Base Holder Adapter Retainer Cover for Ford Escape, Kuga".In the end, the Auxbeam LEDs were okay but not great, so three stars. I sent these back. They were less bright than I expected from their lumen rating, and the need to buy the error-canceling devices meant that they were as expensive as purchasing higher-wattage LEDs that might not trigger the CANBUS error. I managed to find fanless 45W LEDs which ended up being both MUCH brighter and error-free, at a price similar to what I would have spent for this pair plus error-canceling devices. If you're interested in going this route, you can search for "Green-L H7 LED Headlight Conversion Kit Fanless Car Headlight Bulbs Copper Heat Dissipation 90W 9800lm". They have some design issues that make installation a bit tricky however, which I will discuss in my review there.
