When I ordered this my wife laughed at me and said it was a waste of money. I did a lot of research before purchasing this product and as this was our first baby we had no idea how sticky diaper ointment is and I am glad I purchased this applicator. It may seem like a useless product and yes you can use your hands or use a diaper to spread it out. With a diaper it will not be easy to get smeared yourself, you will have to use your finger in some places and if you use your finger all ointments are usually very difficult to remove. Now imagine your baby is so hungry but you need to wash your hands thoroughly because you smeared it with your fingers. I don't think it's worth it. I would say buy this product and thank me and other positive reviews later. Of course my wife now says it was the best return on any other baby product we've ever bought.
