1/2 inch thick is a bit misleading. Because the rug is a series of wavy, parallel folds, only the overall thickness approaches 1/2 inch. I intended to use these silicone mats to protect the oven's glass surface from falling objects (like cupboard items, hanging small pans and pans) that would shatter the glass surface if something fell. Luckily nothing fell off but I doubled the protection to be safe as I'm not sure a single '1/2' mat will do the job. Great for heat protection. Cleaning? In fact, you have to rub them with a cloth or a soft brush to remove particles or grease. I wish they were bigger so I need less rugs to protect my stove.
