I really wanted to like them - great reviews everywhere, cute prints, lots of hype. Well I've tried them and they're all over the top. First, the fabric argument against disposables: Advantages of disposables: They absorb more, so you don't have to change them as often, they're less bulky, easier to use, you can just throw them away Disadvantages of disposables: expensive, you have to buy them all the time, they don't come in one size bad for the environment. Fabric Pros: Better for the environment, Softer on the skin, One size fits all, Can be reused with a second baby, Inexpensive, Cute prints and colors Fabric Cons: Difficult to wash and dry, Less comfortable to put on, Less absorbent when it's leaking Baby is very wet and diaper has been worn too long. Once they stop absorbing, even disposable towels will leak. It's just that disposables can handle more liquid than fabric. Snaps and Velcro Fasteners: Advantages of fasteners: Everyone says they last longer in the wash. Disadvantages of fasteners: if baby is in between sizes, the diaper is either too tight or too loose, the buttons at the end are a hazard - when baby gets to this size, you can accidentally pinch your baby's skin while wearing it ( VERY BLOWING!), and the buttons are noisy in the washer and dryer - it's hard to sleep when they're dry. Velcro: safer, quieter, easier to put on, easier to resize. I think I can live with the inconvenience of the laundry. Finally, Rumparooz and Lil Joey are super bulky in general, the patented gusset doesn't prevent much leakage - they will leak if worn for more than 3 hours. The crotch makes it difficult to insert the poop pad and also adds bulk to the diaper. Eventually, the gusset leaves marks on the baby's skin (similar to rubber bands) that irritate the skin and make the diaper more uncomfortable. Maybe it's good for guys, but definitely not for girls. They wash well but dry poorly. Still slightly damp after 60 minutes on low. And while they say they're good for preterm babies, they're so bulky I wouldn't use them until the baby is at least 8 pounds. So no, they're not worth the money or the hype. Bumgenius has special preemie sizes, less bulky and no gusset. I'm trying them out now. If the velcro fits, I'll leave it, otherwise I'll have to look for something else.
