I wanted something that would protect my sensitive skin on my head, neck, ears and face from the sun. I want to use it for both gardening and travelling. Since I've had it, I've been wearing it on a few windy spring days while gardening and also on an early morning hike with my son's preschool. It was great and I got a lot of compliments. The material is nice and flexible and softer than I expected. It weighs more than a straw hat, but not so much that you can see it when you wear it on your head. 5 inches is a good size. It doesn't protrude to hit people around you, but it's wide enough to lightly cover your neck and face, and part of your back and shoulders. The brim is flexible and WILL fall off somewhere; All you have to do is adjust it so the spoon is over the part of your head, face or neck that needs protection. I love having that kind of flexibility! The dark underside goes a long way in reducing sun glare even without sunglasses. I have two preschoolers who love the hat and I see them play with it a lot, but they haven't managed to bend or break it yet. Wind, although I've had a few tight calls in those spring gusts. If I get a chance, I can buy some duct tape at a craft store and apply some plain tape to the sides for extra wind protection, but I'm not too concerned about that now make. Now here I am trying to talk myself out of buying another one in a different color!
