START button compatibility issue

I'm new to emulators. I just downloaded Project64 (version 2.3.2.202) on my Windows 10 PC and ordered 4 iNNEXT N64 controllers with USB sticks to play with an old school style ROM instead of a keyboard. I watched a bunch of videos on YouTube about setting up buttons for a USB controller and it looked very simple: plug in a wired USB controller, open Project64, click Options, click Controller -Configure the plug-in and then click each button in turn to assign a new input and within 10 seconds press the corresponding button on the controller. This worked for most buttons, but for some reason it doesn't work when I try to customize the START button. It just shows up as "Unassigned". Since it's "Unassigned" when I press START on the controller while Project64 is running, it just toggles between emulator full screen and full screen mode. This YouTube video I watched didn't have this problem. The guy in the video just pressed the START button and it's calibrated to "Gamepad: Button 9". So I'm just confused about what I'm doing wrong. Normally I would assume the controller is faulty but as I said I have ordered 4 of these controllers and it does not calibrate the START button on any of them. Unless of course all 4 are not broken. Can someone help?
