We have a purple mattress, so we really wanted to protect it and not affect the comfort of our mattress. I tested the waterproofness by pouring a cup of water on the mattress topper. I have already washed it according to the instructions and put it on the bed. The soft topsheet fully absorbs liquid (which is actually a good thing because I think it gets rid of more dirt). But after sitting until the water was completely absorbed, it didn't pass and the mattress stayed dry. Love that it's soft and doesn't rustle like the ones my mom bought when we were kids! 4 stars because there is no protection on the sides and the waterproof layer ends right at the edge of the mattress. Also, it doesn't stretch much under the mattress.
