I was a bit concerned when I ordered this as I wasn't sure if it would work. I couldn't be more wrong. I mounted it on the wall about 30cm above the tray and haven't had to worry about the box smelling since. The only time I noticed the smell again was when the device needed to be charged. Lasted just over a week on a single charge. To charge, simply unscrew it from the base like a smoke alarm and plug it into a power outlet. It recharges very quickly. I recommend it. Cats ignore him and the blue light adds a dim night glow to the area around him.
