Only the best of Razors & Blades

I bought my first Merkur, a 34C, in college in the late 70's. I still have this razor and it's probably my most used razor in the last 40 years. I found this in a department store; that was when everyone was crazy about razor cartridges. I have over half a dozen Merkur models and love most of them. However, I recently saw that Mercury had to file for bankruptcy and that their future is unclear (although I think someone will buy them). So I ordered this 34g which is only 34c in a gold bowl. Exactly the same razor. So when I opened it up, lathered it up and shaved it was like an old friend. I don't like Merkur brand blades, just not my taste, but when I switched to Astra, everything went smoothly. I don't have a Fred Flintstone beard since I'm blonde, so I don't need the most aggressive razor. I've never cut with a 34; it's just the right balance of aggression for me, even without adjustment. As for my Mercury settings, I always set them to "1" or "2". There's a reason this is probably the most popular DE razor in the world. It's just a great all-rounder. Also, unlike butterfly razors, they are two-piece and easy to keep clean with no sealing mechanism. Every few months I just take the lid off and run an old toothbrush over the contact pads. I really hope that Merkur can continue as a company that started in the 19th century. Chrome or gold finish, you can't go wrong with the 34.
