I wanted to like this compass because I liked the overall design, but unfortunately it didn't do its main job of pointing NORTH. Straight out of the box, it was pointing north at a right angle (no - there wasn't any metal or magnets nearby). The disc inside didn't seem level and centered on its stand, so I tapped it a few times and it ended up pointing north. However, when I turned the compass and let it settle, it was still a good 45 degrees off. Sometimes it pointed northeast, sometimes northwest, and somewhere in between. The other little compass features - the sight glass, alignment lines, cap, build quality, etc - seemed fine, but those things don't really matter unless the damn thing is showing me where north really is. When I'm on a boat I need a reliable backup compass that will get me safely to point B. I can't do that if I don't know exactly where north is.
