Ideal for testing gold! Not bad for platinum either. You need to calibrate the machine differently for platinum and gold. For gold you can just use an 18k ring and put the needle in the middle of the 18k area. But for platinum you either have to use a piece of platinum to measure it or, if you want to use an 18k ring, you have to put the needle right on the line between 22k gold and platinum, NOT the middle 18k Range as you would expect. It's very strange, but when I calibrate it this way, it works fine for platinum. Then I have to calibrate it normally to test the gold again.
