Removing the lining also makes them larger on the inside, which isn't a problem with wellies, but adds value and justifies the cost. Just for comparison, you can buy a pair of kids' Sorel running shoes for about the same price, with a zipper, and they can be warmer and slightly better in the snow. But kids couldn't put them on, they're not that easy to clean, and they don't have that dual-use ability.
