Review on Frey Scientific Enameled Magnet Length by Leslie Matlak

Hot melt problem

I bought this for a home physics class I teach. The students built a classic "simple" motor using a coil of magnet wire suspended between two conductive posts and a home-made armature by grinding away the enamel insulation on one side of the wire. However, many students had the problem of the enamel peeling around the perimeter, defeating the purpose of using enameled wire in the first place. I've done this in previous grades with another brand of wire available at a well known general electronics store and never had this problem. Unfortunately, our practical attempt at the end of the year failed somewhat this time. If you don't want to do this particular experiment, the wire is probably fine, but I'm stuck with most of a pound of magnet wire not working for the purpose I intended it to be.

Pros
  • This is great
Cons
  • Some errors
