I prefer to keep my toothbrush in a case to keep it clean and free of bathroom germs, but most cheap plastic cases I've bought quickly get black mold inside and it may not be healthy ! Steripods contain a chemical called thymol that should make a big difference. Thymol is a natural phenolic compound found in thyme and some other herbs. Thyme has been used for preservation and medicinal purposes since ancient times. Thymol is a powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent, about 8 times more potent than phenol (carbolic acid). It's the active ingredient in Listerine, now better known as a mouthwash but originally invented as a surgical antiseptic. Thymol is classified by the FDA as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). These pods are perfect for my Arm & Hammer SpinBrush. The specific smell of steripods is due to the thymol component contained in it. The instructions recommend rinsing the brush and shaking off excess water before inserting it into the Steripod, and then rinsing it again before using the brush. DO NOT rinse the Steripod!
