I've been using crappy Sony headphones for a few years now. They get pretty gross and sound downright mediocre so I tried replacing them. This is the second pair I've tried (the first ones are $60) and I haven't found a pair that are significantly better. In many ways they are worse. First, the lousy dormouse is easy. Second, Sony costs around $8-12. Third, Sony doesn't have an L/R orientation, so any pair of headphones can be placed in either ear at any time. Sorry but I don't care and I can't tell which channel to play in which ear when I'm on the treadmill or watching porn. Fourth, Sony are convenient. The drums are a little heavy and tend to fall out of your ears. I use foam inserts to prevent this, but you can still feel the weight in your year. They have a specific L/R orientation, and L/R is printed on the side of the buds in tiny letters that a person with poor eyesight cannot see. So you'll have to try every time you put them back in your ears, as the alignment isn't obvious when you look at them. Once in your ear, they are not very comfortable and their shape has nothing to do with the ear canal. So you have an edge that rests on the bottom of your ear, which becomes uncomfortable over time. They are also quite bulky and protrude from the ear, so lying on their side would be annoying and even more uncomfortable. That being said, if you're listening to the drum in a quiet room there's actually plenty of nuance and solid bass given the size. I wouldn't go as far as some of these folks to say that there is a "soundstage" (and yes, I'm familiar with the soundstage). But there is clarity and nuance. Probably enough to justify the $30 price tag. Actually a pretty impressive sound quality that you get for 30 euros, unfortunately other defects were enough to make me return it.
