My downlights become a big problem when a bulb burns out. Two of them are high above the stairs in the vaulted ceiling, which makes them even worse. It would be easier if they had twist/twist bulbs, but they had a short swivel base with 2 pins, and aligning those pins on the end of a long rod at the same time, inserting the pins and twisting them correctly was a mess. My wife broke a lightbulb and I cut myself cleaning up. Decided to find an adapter that would work better. It worked. In fact they worked so well I bought enough to set up the whole house, I have lots of built in lights. Then I found out that some of my other lamps use the same 2 pin connectors. so i bought a few more. The lamp extends about 1/2 inch more because of the adapter. So if your lantern has a cap or lampshade, make sure it still fits. None of me had a problem with that, but I imagine it might be a problem for some. I also bought some LED bulbs, not CFLs, which were all over my house. This gives me better, brighter lights that are much easier to replace, although I have to use a long pole to get to them.
