This bowl is not suitable for storing shaving soap. It's fairly small (about 3 inches in diameter, 2 inches deep) and doesn't have a lid, so it's used to lather your shaving soap/cream. Once you've wet your shaving brush, apply soap to it (or put a drop of shaving cream on the shaving brush) and then swirl the shaving brush in the bowl to create lather. The brush and foam are warm and the polished surface also works like a mirror if you only have one shaving kit. It will also startle people and animals if it accidentally falls on a tile. It was fun figuring it out. But even that showed how durable it is! No dents or scratches! Great little shaving bowl!
