Wrong solution

Pads too hard. They don't compress enough under the pressure from tightening the lens, and there is a noticeable gap midway between the gasket and the sheet metal. The adhesive is needed to create a seal when additional pressure is applied to the lens to close the gap. The problem is that the gasket is under tension to maintain a tight seal. That will fail sooner rather than later. To top it off, I tried tightening it to close the gap and the adjusting nut failed. So now I have to remove it, but I won't for fear of tearing the stuck seal when removing it, and I won't have anything.
