I was concerned about the purchase based on some reviews, but decided to try it myself. I'm glad I did as it worked out great for our dinner party. I read all the instructions twice. Just to make sure I understand exactly what needs to be done to keep the food warm as so many people have expressed their dissatisfaction. This kept the food warm throughout our 5 hour dinner. That was great. No one needed to reheat food in the microwave as the heating pad did the job. I used the serving trays that came with the set, although I like that you can detach them and just use the flat base (with your own dishes) if you wish. I haven't done it yet, but I think it will work just as well (if you follow the guidelines). Serving is NOT deep so I don't think it would be helpful for a large buffet. We had twelve people at a dinner party and it was just the right size for our event. I wish the lids had slots for spoons and for that reason I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5. Overall I'm happy with this purchase and will definitely buy again.
