As someone who has used tretinoin (prescription retinol), this thing works very similar. Even in the sense that if you rub too hard, you'll find that a pure white layer starts to form. There's nothing wrong with that - to me it's a sign that this serum has a lot of active ingredients in it. Another proof of activity is that there may be some slight chipping on first use. (It worked for me, but my skin is sensitive.) After I started noticing dandruff, I did a few things to soften it up. I started by applying a moisturizer first, THEN a serum. After my skin got used to it, I mixed the serum with a basic hyaluronic acid serum so it wouldn't be as strong. I now reapply the serum to my skin immediately after cleansing and reap the full benefits. My skin is at its clearest, pores are shrinking and dark spots are beginning to fade. . I am in love with this serum. Just remember that retinol is a commitment: you have to be able to get through dryness, flaking, and sometimes the initial acne bout (cleansing) before your skin is clear. Once your skin clears up, WOW. So it's worth it. I will buy more of this stuff.
