Review on Streamlined Music Experience: NETGEAR Wireless Digital Music Player by Isaac Logan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Powerful and easy to use, but one important thing is missing.

I understand that others have had problems with this unit but I have not. It connected easily to my wireless network (using a Linksys router, not Netgear) the first time (after I configured the WEP settings), finds all my servers (MusicMatch and Netgear servers) and lets me use them play all, sorted by artist, playlist, genre, etc.) with relative ease. I have two computers on the network acting as servers and it finds and plays them all with no errors. I am using the latest software and firmware from Netgear (server version 3.3.36/client version 1.3.7). Unlike most others here, I don't use Rhapsody. I said "relative simplicity" because I was hoping to have a web interface for the device so I wouldn't be tied to a (too small) remote control. As such, my biggest disappointment with the device is the inability to select and play music using my PC, and with the small LCD on the device I'm always hunched over to select what I want to play. The Netgear Media Server software is sufficient, maybe even better, allowing you to import your existing songs and playlists from other servers (MusicMatch again), as well as create new playlists and categorize your songs. So it's reliable (for me) and works as advertised. But without a web interface my wishes are missing. It's not a 'defect', it's a design feature, but I wish it wasn't there. As a result, having owned this device for a short time, I am considering purchasing a Slim Devices "Squeezebox" to replace it. So why 4 stars and not 5? The lack of that web control is exactly what I want, which is why it loses a star. The other 4 are related to the fact that he does what he does very well and without any problems.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
